Since 1989, the Banco Alimentare Onlus Foundation has been recovering surplus production from the agri-food chain and, through its network of 21 organisations spread throughout the country, redistributes it to over 8,800 charitable organisations offering food aid to 1,560,000 poor and marginalised people throughout Italy.
Banco Alimentare recovers and redistributes foodstuffs that are still in good condition and have not expired and would otherwise be destined for destruction. In 2013, 80,000 tonnes of food were recovered and distributed. The activity of Banco Alimentare is possible thanks to the daily work of 1,800 volunteers.
